4th Field Day – 11 March 2023
Some thought it would be too warm for further tree planting; some thought it would be too cold. In the event, however, on Saturday, 11 March we went ahead with our fourth and final Field Day for the winter period 2022/2023. Despite a few early snow flurries, the weather remained dull but dry during our extended morning work period. Eighteen enthusiastic and energetic Friends of Forbes Field, including the seven members of the Management Group, conducted a series of tasks.
Our main effort was to plant 16 non-fruit trees in the ‘Half Moon’ plot near the western boundary of the Field, namely: six Field Maples; three Hornbeams and Whitebeams apiece; two Rowans; and two Cobnuts (cultivated Hazels). We also refurbished, as a temporary measure pending the erection of brand-new fencing and gates, fifteen metres of fence adjoining Hops Close. Other tasks completed included the strengthening of the northern boundary fence, the removal of barbed wire and bramble throughout the site, and the restoration of an old bonfire area to meadow.
As a result, we’ve now planted around two-thirds of the planned number of trees. Moreover, the Field is now safer, looks much better and is ready for us to provide an attractive venue for the village’s King’s Coronation Event on Sunday, 7 May 2023. Join us then!
Looking ahead, our next tree planting will be in the late Autumn/early Winter. Step by step, we are realising our vision for Forbes Field as an attractive and valuable community space for Chilmark.
