Mungo Melvin

Major General (Retd) Mungo Melvin CB OBE, a former Royal Engineer, is a published military historian and lifelong tree lover. Since living in Chilmark on and off for the past 20 years, he has been keen to improve the local living environment. When the Parish Council asked for ideas regarding the future of Forbes Field he came up with a detailed proposal to develop the site as a village asset, including a community orchard. This project is now being realised by the Forbes Field Management Group, which he chairs.

Johan joined the FFMG to help with the project. He was promised it would not involve spreadsheets. So far he is reasonably happy with that promise...

Lesley Denekamp

Lesley and Johan have lived in Chilmark since 2010. They bought a derelict cottage and knocked it down and built a new house. Initially some villagers said they wished they had left it as it was. 😀 Lesley is looking forward to managing the field with her Massey Ferguson. Johan is not. 😱

I live close to Forbes Field at the top of Kent’s Hill and am keen to see Forbes Field restored for the enjoyment of all in Chilmark. I love nature in general and wildflowers in particular. Hence I am delighted to be the Wildflowers Officer of the Management Group. I pledge to do my best to encourage the return of downland flower species such as Knapweed, Birdsfoot Trefoil and Scabious to the Field as the late Diana Forbes would have wished.

Neil Pattenden

The Pattendens moved to Chilmark in 1987 when Neil was serving in the Royal Navy.  Diana Forbes and he shared an interest in natural history.  Miss Forbes would talk about the plants and animals of the local countryside, especially to children, for example young Pattendens, when she took them riding.  When the Cold War was over Neil left the navy to work, based in Chilmark, as a linguist and in consultancy.  Neil is the member of the Forbes Field Management Group whose role is ‘community engagement’.

Simon Butcher

Simon and Sally Butcher have been Chilmark residents since 1984 with all four of our sons being born here and passing through the school. All of them benefited from Diana Forbes’ mentoring and kindness and they and their families will certainly enjoy Forbes Field. This background is why I am supporting the project as part of the Forbes Field Management Group by using my experience and expertise of over 45 years in farm business and environmental land management.
